This course facilitates achievement of GDC required learning outcomes for a dental nurse to achieve skills and competencies in respect of additional duties to include applying fluoride varnish, measuring and recording plaque indices and further skills in oral health promotion.
Course Outline
This CPD course will equip applicants to work within their skill set providing oral health promotion within their clinical practice and within the community. In addition, completion of this course will enhance the application credentials of individuals wishing to further develop their careers by undertaking further qualifications.
This course will be taught using a blended approach of online teaching, face to face learning, self-directed learning and practical skills development under supervision in the student’s practice.
The course will take approximately 3-4 months to complete, allowing time for teaching sessions along with skills development in clinical practice.
This course is suitable for GDC registered dental nurses who have undertaken at least a year in clinical practice before completing the course. Exceptions, for example when a DCP is participating in current pilots or new programs benefitting from this additional qualification, can be discussed with the teaching team.
Lecture Based Learning
There will be a series of online teaching sessions via ZOOM which will take place in evenings. Alongside these there will be a small number of face-to-face sessions which will take place at Oracle Dental Group, 13A Bromley Road, Colchester, Essex, CO4 3JE
Personal Tutor
All students will be assigned a personal tutor of Learn Bright Dental who will be able to offer support and guidance throughout the course and will be the person to contact if you are experiencing any difficulties.
Online Resources
All students have access to the online learning platform Moodle. This contains all support documents, copies of lecture slides and recordings if they form part of this course.
An announcement board on Moodle is used to engage with students and promote shared learning. Active engagement with Moodle is expected by all students.
A recommended reading list will be provided along with journals, articles and guidance document to support self-directed learning.
Course Work
Each student is required to produce an oral health education leaflet/video/social media post using the information within Delivering Better Oral Health to be used within their practice. A copy of your final leaflet will need to be sent to your personal tutor.
Case Study Logbook
Using the knowledge and skills gained from the lectures students need to complete 8 case studies of patients seen in their practice or within a community-based programme. This will cover preventative advice, plaque scores and Fluoride application. Students will need to have close supervision from a mentor within their practice, we suggest this is either a Dental Hygienist/Therapist or Dentist who can provide them with support and advice.
Case studies are submitted to a personal tutor who will provide feedback and comments allowing to make amendments/changes prior to final submission of cases for marking.
Work Based Place Assessments
Students will be invited to attend Bromley Road Dental Surgery in Colchester for a work-based place assessment in which they will provide preventative advice/treatment to a patient under the supervision of one of the tutors.
Assessments
There are two stages to the assessment, a multiple-choice written exam (MCQ) and an objective structured clinical exam (OSCE). Both assessments will take place online.
Mentorship
We hope that your colleagues within the practices will be able to support students throughout this course. We would ask to have a named mentor, this could be a dentist, dental therapist or hygienist. There is a practice agreement form for them to complete and return to us agreeing to support the student learning.
