The NHS and the wider health and care system are working to provide information and services digitally when suitable. For patients, digital health may offer increased access to information and care, as well as greater convenience and opportunities for more involvement in their own health and shared care. For the health and care system, digital health can contribute to more efficient delivery of care, improved outcomes, and potential cost reductions.

Digital systems are essential for a modern, efficient health service, allowing seamless information sharing between care providers and patients. GP IT systems are central to primary care, supporting millions of patient interactions and enabling online services like appointment bookings and repeat prescriptions in all English practices.

Since April 2015, practices must offer online access, with 15.1 million people registered. In tight financial conditions, IT should enhance patient experience, reduce administrative work, and support integration across care pathways, with NHS England continuing to develop IT capabilities to meet evolving needs.
