Extended Duties for Dental Nurses – Disease Prevention Module

You may be aware that the NHS Dental Contract will be changing from April 2026.

The proposed reforms were detailed in the recent NHS dentistry contract: quality and payment reforms – consultation document – NHS dentistry contract: quality and payment reforms – consultation document – GOV.UK

The reforms propose introducing a new course of treatment to enable fluoride varnish application in children without a full dental examination. This new course of treatment will be paid at 0.5 UDAs and will allow Extended Duties Dental Nurses (EDDNs) to contribute to the care of children between regular examinations.

However, we appreciate that many NHS dental practices may not have EDDNs as part of their team. To help practices prepare to take advantage of this reform Learn Bright Dental are providing an excellent training module to upskill dental nurses.  This course will start on Monday 13th October 2025.

We fully understand how busy NHS practices are.  To help as many nurses to be able to expand their scope of practice, the course will be taking place mostly outside of clinical times in the evenings. It is a hybrid course with most content being delivered online. There will be 2 sessions face to face (in Colchester) to keep travel to a minimum.

For students working in Essex, Essex Local Dental Committee (LDC) are kindly funding 50% of the payment per student, therefore the cost for the student will be £325 (instead the normal course fee of £650). The subsidised places are being allocated fist come first served.

Further details about this course can be found in the attached Welcome Document.
